Following a critically-praised premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, movie fans across the globe have been anxiously awaiting the release of Life, an elegant and thought-provoking biographical drama from world renowned director and photographer, Anton Corbijn. American movie fans now have reason to rejoice, as Cinedigm announced today the film’s upcoming U.S. arrival on December 4, where it will be available in select U.S. theaters, as well as on Digital and Video On Demand from Cinedigm (NASDAQ: CIDM).
From acclaimed director Anton Corbijn (Control, A Most Wanted Man, The American), Life is produced by See-Saw Films’ Iain Canning and Emile Sherman (The King’s Speech, Mr Holmes,) with Christina Piovesan of First Generation Films (Red Lights, The Whistleblower), and is co-produced by Wolfgang Mueller and Benito Mueller of Barry Films. Written by Luke Davies, the film features outstanding performances by Dane DeHaan (Life After Beth; Kill Your Darlings; The Place Beyond The Pines), Robert Pattinson (Twilight, Cosmopolis, Maps To The Stars), Alessandra Mastronardi (To Rome with Love, Romeo and Juliet), and Ben Kingsley (Gandhi, Sexy Beast, Schindler’s List). FilmNation Entertainment is handling international sales.
As Corbijn’s follow-up to A Most Wanted Man, Life captures the nuances and complexities of the relationship between photographer and subject in a way rarely seen or understood by someone outside the business. A fitting task for Corbijn, given his extensive background in photography, Life provides a rare look at history through the other side of the camera lens, and was inspired by the true story of the friendship between Dennis Stock (Pattinson) and James Dean (DeHaan), a bond that would change both of their lives, and provide the world with some of the most iconic images from that age.
“I cannot wait for the story of Dennis Stock and James Dean, which is at the center of Life, to come to the American audience, as it played a part in the permanent cultural changes of the last century within American society and beyond,” says Corbijn. “It was a tremendous experience to work with Rob and Dane in bringing this story to life - pun intended - and I’d like to thank Cinedigm for spreading the word and the visuals in the U.S.”
Dennis Stock (Pattinson) was only 26 when he was commissioned to photograph James Dean (DeHaan), Hollywood’s rebellious free spirit on the verge of superstardom, for LIFE Magazine in 1955. The assignment took the pair on a photographic journey across the United States, from Los Angeles to New York, and finally to Dean’s childhood farmhouse in Indiana. And while Stock thought he was capturing a young actor in the instant before he became a household name, in fact he documented the last moments of intimacy and simplicity that James Dean ever knew.
